The Philosophy
The philosophy you are most likely already following — without knowing it has a name.
The tl;dr — in three beats
You want things to go well. You've seen enough go wrong to stay honest about it. You think, then act. You learn from experience and from the stories you hear — and the ones your own mind tells you. You may not have called it a philosophy. But you've been living it.
The world gets better — when it gets better — because a small number of thoughtful, committed people decided to make it so. Not in grand gestures. In consistent effort, at the scale they could actually reach. Classic Meliorism. Still true.
This is the shift that changes everything. Classic Meliorism says humans can improve the world. Meliorism 2.0 starts one step earlier: you — specifically — have intrinsic worth. You carry hidden value that is worth discovering. And you have real agency. The better version isn't something you build toward. It's already present. The work is revealing it.
The original idea is not new. Philosophers and reformers in the late 19th century named it: the world is not fixed. Human effort matters. What is does not have to be what must be.
This was a radical claim in a world shaped by both religious fatalism ("God's will") and secular determinism ("history's tide"). Meliorism said: neither. The world's direction depends on what people decide to do in it. Not optimism — optimism assumes improvement will arrive. Meliorism says improvement requires decision and effort.
Meliorism 1.0 is still true. It underpins every social reform movement, every business built on genuine value, every person who chose to try. It is the founding premise.
Here is where the philosophy takes a turn that most people miss.
The standard Meliorist frame is additive: find what's broken, apply effort, make it better. Build toward a better version. This is entirely reasonable — and it is the root of most coaching, advising, and personal development.
Meliorism 2.0 says the better version is not something you build toward. It is already latent.
In a person, in a practice, in a company, in a community — the better version is present. It is being suppressed, obscured, distracted from, or buried under accumulated noise. The work is not addition. The work is precision removal of what hides it.

Michelangelo did not claim to create. He claimed to reveal. The figure was already there — fully present, fully itself — before he picked up the chisel. His work was removal. Careful, precise, disciplined removal.
That is the whole practice. That is what distinguishes Meliorism 2.0 from every version of self-help that tells you to add more — more habits, more systems, more goals, more identity. Meliorism 2.0 asks: what is already working that you are covering up? What are you adding that isn't actually you?
This is not passive. Removal requires more precision than addition. The sculptor who takes too much destroys the figure. You have to see what is there before you can clear what is not.
The first discipline is witnessing — seeing a person, a business, or a situation without the overlay of your assumptions about what they should become. You are not looking for a gap to fill. You are looking for what is already present and not yet visible to them.
The second discipline is discernment — knowing what to remove and what to protect. Most people under pressure add. They add activity, explanation, structure, strategy. Meliorism 2.0 asks what is generating friction that doesn't belong. What is noise? What is fear wearing the costume of responsibility?
The third discipline is patience. Revelation takes longer than construction, and the results are less controllable — because you are uncovering something real, not building something designed.
The two movements
Worth already exists in every person. Improvement is the act of revealing it — by removing conditioning, false beliefs, and accumulated noise. Inward work. The book.
Businesses, markets, communities, code — these can be built better. The same subtractive logic applies. Outward work. The practice. The brand.
The individual finds what's already there — then brings it into the spaces they share with others. That's where the building begins.
What this looks like in practice
The role is not to build someone. It is to stand beside them while they find what they already knew — and support them as they stop doing the things that are covering it up. The Michelangelo Move.
Most businesses trying to grow are actually carrying things they stopped needing years ago. The best version of the company already exists inside the current one. Strategy is finding and removing what doesn't belong.
Software doesn't need ethical principles added on top. It needs the extractive assumptions removed from the default. A developer standard for code that honors human worth — built on subtraction, not compliance.
Radical transparency doesn't add accountability — it removes the fog that lets unaccountability persist. The work of improving institutions is almost always a clearing operation, not a construction project.
